A view of the Gulf of Aqaba, signed on, by J. L. Gérôme

The expedition, whose departure is organized in Marseilles, is like a study trip. All keep journals, notebooks and sketches. Some, like Paul-Marie Lenoir will publish them in the form of travel stories. Albert Goupil produces many documentary photographs on site, which will be used by Gérôme to support his paintings.
We know two studies on cartons representing the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aqaba, carried out in situ by the artist and which undoubtedly served him to the realization of the painting on his return to France.
The island of Pharaoh is recognized by its ancient fortress, which locates the scene in the north of the Gulf of Aqaba. Concealed by the mist, we can also see the pink mountains of Hedjaz. This view is animated by several dhows, most common traditional sailing boats sailing on the Red Sea. These sailboats with steeply pitched masts and triangular sails were broadcast very early by the Arab peoples for commercial purposes.
Gérôme's talent for producing orientalist scenes is no longer to be proven. Our painting, however, confirms the subtlety of the artist who manages to make Westerners travel through a painting whose reality is closely linked to the emergence of photography.
